Kids LOVE boxes. Even more so, they LOVE sensory boxes. Bringing a sensory bin into therapy ignites imagination, creativity, and communication! Here are several reasons why I love using sensory bins in speech therapy:
Easily Created Themes
Gone are the hours of endless planning for one day of therapy! Pop things from Amazon into your cart, make a stop by the dollar store, or rummage through your own children’s playroom to grab items and create the perfect sensory bin. No time to prepare items for the bins yourself? Check out my Sensory Bin Companion bundle on TPT! Each theme includes 20 high-resolution photos to engage students. Included in the bundle are multiple sentence stems to support the individual needs of your students! This is a growing bundle, so once you purchase you will be getting a significant discount for the value of the complete bundle!
Hands-on Learning
Sensory bins provide an opportunity for children to engage in a hands-on learning experience. Sand, water, puff balls, beads, rocks, beans, noodles, and rice are just several options among many you can use in the bins for tactile input. Some children benefit more from seeing real items or pictures in the bins for increased visual support. This is why I love the high-resolution, real images from the Sensory Bin Companion bundle! Items can be quickly added or taken away from the bin depending on the level of your students. Social language skills, such as turn-taking and requesting, are easily addressed with sensory bin fun too!
Add Visual/Objects
As previously mentioned, it’s super easy to add more objects/pictures into the bins later on during a session or in subsequent sessions. If you need an idea to expand on using the sensory bins… look no further! The Describing Visuals with High Resolution Real Photos includes 48 printable flash cards (8 cards per theme), 15 describing activity pages, and printable describing visuals. These visuals will help your students build their vocabulary as they generate comprehensive descriptive sentences.
Sensory bins are truly exciting for all! The beauty of the bins is the ability to make lessons and tasks as structured or unstructured as you want them! Take time to explore your creativity in constructing the bins. Use the above mentioned materials to carry out the lessons with ease!
