Science experiments are hands-on activities that help create so many language opportunities. To help minimize prep time, I keep a “science kit” in my room with materials that I can use again and again. In this post, I will share all the ways using science experiments will help your students!
Hands-on Learning
Science experiments provide opportunities to trigger many senses- visual, tactile, auditory and more. This play dough recipe is perfect for tactile learners and you only need TWO ingredients.
Target Multiple Goals
Next, science experiments are perfect for mixed groups. You can target so many goals with science experiments. Here are a few examples:
- Sequencing- Students can sequence the steps for the experiment.
- Following Directions- With any experiment or recipe, students will be able to practice following directions.
- Describing- You can have students to describe what they observe after each step (color, smell, chemical reaction, texture, etc.)
- Turn Taking- This a great way to practice taking turns by having each student complete one step of the experiment.
- Making Predictions- Throughout the experiment, ask students to make predictions about what they think will happen next.
Develop Life Skills
With science experiments, students can practice functional life skills that they will be able to apply in the future. For example, you can practice measuring, following a recipe and learning safety rules.
Opportunities to Develop Social Interactions with Peers
Science experiments prompt students to ask questions and make comments. Also, students will likely share the materials allowing them to practice turn taking.
Are you looking for a place to start with adding science to your sessions?
These experiments include easy to follow student visuals with a student-centered design layout for the procedures. Also, several experiments include repeated materials or items that are easily accessible. In this resource, I included student reflection sheets for you to do with your students after the experiment.
This Science Unit Includes:
- High resolution photos and clipart to engage your students
- Functional materials that develop skills students will use in the future
- 8 Hands-on Experiments with step-by-step visuals
I hope that these visuals are helpful! I know you will love using science experiments during speech therapy.
