The 2022 winter games start in a few weeks! Do you enjoy watching winter sports? I want to help you bring the fun to your room with these speech therapy activities for the winter games!
Winter Games
Snowball Bowling: For this activity, you’ll need plastic cups and plush snowballs (affiliate link). I grabbed these snowball from Amazon, but you can also use paper crumpled into a ball too! Have students say a target word five times for each cup they knock down. You can also use the cups and snowballs to practice prepositions (in, on, out, under, between, etc.) Download free preposition visuals HERE!
Ice Hockey: Grab a backing sheet and freeze a thin layer of ice. Build two goals with bricks. Then, use spoons or spatulas and a coin to play hockey. I used these silicone ones from Dollar Tree and let my students use a dry erase marker to draw a hockey player. During this activity, you can target taking turns, sportsmanship and social interaction with peers.
Snowball Stack: Using small marshmallows and large, plastic tweezers, students can race each other to build the tallest snowball tower. You can also use this activity to practice fine motor skills.
Here is a list of winter games vocabulary words organized by sound!
Snow Recipe
Your students will LOVE this one! By using recipes and experiments during speech, you can target a variety of skills!
- Hands-on learning with tactile and visual input
- Sequencing/ Following Directions
- Describing
- Develop Life Skills- measuring and safety rules
- Opportunities to develop social interactions with peers
For this recipe, you only need TWO ingredients– corn starch and shaving cream! I used 16oz. of corn starch and 6oz. (about half of a can) to create a foamy snow that is easy to mold. Once students make their snow, you can add pictures or small objects to continue the session!
Golden Speech Craft
This craft deserves a gold medal! For this activity, I used gold tissue paper, but you can use yellow paper too. You will also need my “Golden Speech” articulation pages. I will send these pages to you for FREE! Simply leave your email below!
Have your students tear the paper into small pieces. As they say each word five times, cover the picture with the paper.
Articulation Practice
With I Spy: Winter Sports, your student will be engaged while getting high repetition of their target sound. Tape the images around the room. As the student locates each picture, they say the words in each box that match the picture. The first person to find all the images, wins!
To make this activity more fun, have students “skate” around the room by sliding their feet on paper plates.
For these pages you can use pompoms, play dough, mini erases, buttons and more to connect the dots. These pages are perfect to use for multiple sessions!
Classroom Decorations
If you want to go all-in with this theme, you can add a few extras! To set the scene, I hung flags from each country and added winter backdrop! I also bought gold medals at Dollar Tree to give my students at the end of the week. I stacked my Nugget to make a podium. Remember- there’s you don’t need to purchase a lot to make this theme come to life for your students!
