Summer break, for many of us, is on the horizon. For those of us in the school system, we are organizing folders, finishing up IEP meetings, and purging or packing away all necessary materials for summer cleanings and possible room moves. In the midst of all the chaos that accompanies May, I frequently have thoughts of how my students’ speech and language skills will be upon returning for the next school year. Therefore, I have created several resources to create summer speech programs for students to practice using communication skills with caregivers at home.
Summer Speech Calendars
My Summer Speech Calendars have daily ideas for incorporating speech, language, and fluency skills into fun and easy activities for parents and their children. The calendar set includes a daily activity for months June, July, and August. It comes with the ability to offer parents or guardians a printable version and Google slides with digital stickers! There is a one-page letter to parents on how to use the calendars and additional ideas for them to encourage use of great speech and language over the break!
Speech Practice Parent/Guardian Handout
The Speech Practice Parent/Guardian Handout set is one of my favorite materials to give parents/guardians. You can provide them with the corresponding handout for their student’s speech sounds to target over the summer. The handout set includes prompts for placement and voicing for each sound. There are a total of 25 sounds available in this resource. It’s no prep, low ink usage, and minimal materials for you and caregivers to have to store!
Speech Practice Handout for Parents
Another great parent handout is the Speech Practice Handout for Parents. In the past, I have had parents tell me they just don’t know where to begin when it comes to helping their child with speech/language skills at home. This *FREEBIE* has engaging activities for carryover of skills into the home and when they’re “on the go.” There is information on how to target 10 different skill areas while completing daily tasks or even while traveling. Caregivers will love to see how easy practicing skills can be and appreciate the creative ideas for making it happen!
Daily Task Cards for Language Development
From sunup to sundown, language opportunities can be found in every part of every day. This is why the Daily Task Cards for Language Development will be such an exciting resource for all families. For each day of the week, there is a new theme offering tasks to complete with children. “Safety Sunday” encourages things like having parents teach children their full names while “Thoughtful Thursday” suggests having families call someone to just say, “hello.” Children are able to check off completed tasks which will inspire them to see how many they can accomplish! These would be great to laminate and store on a binder ring to repeat throughout the year over various breaks.
These summer speech programs are great tools to encourage carryover of skills into other environments and help potentially decrease regression over summer break! I hope these remove one more task from your very full plates as this year wraps up and that caregivers will welcome these easy-to-incorporate ideas!
