“Arrrr” you ready for Pirate Day in speech? This is one of my favorite days to celebrate in speech (September 19th) and IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! I love any reason to do a quick room transformation and themed activities with my students. You can find all of the items at Dollar Tree or any party store to complete the room transformation. We are all busy, so keeping this room transformation and these activities easy to implement, is a top priority! You can also reuse many of them items that I will share!
Pirate Themed Decor
First, let’s talk “room transformation” for Pirate Day in speech! The goal was little work, big impact and I think I achieved that with the ocean floor. I used two blue table clothes from Dollar Tree ($1.00 each) and added fish and shark fins (cut from card stock). I gathered and taped the table cloth around the shark fin to give the illusion that the fins were sticking out of the water. The students loved navigating to the table without stepping on a shark!
I added a black table cloth with “creepy cloth” (found in the Halloween section and is used to make spider webs), gold coins, bead necklaces and the first clue for our treasure hunt to my therapy table. This room transformation took 30 minutes and lasted the entire week!
Pirate Themed Speech Therapy Activities
Now, let’s talk about the activities for the week! I started the session with a pirate treasure hunt! The first clue was on my therapy table and the remaining clues where hidden around my room! Each clue required the students to make an inference based on the details.
For example, one clue read, “If you need to blow your nose or sneeze, walk over and grab one of these.” Students would then find the next clue under the box of tissues. There was also a “mission” at each clue that the student needed to complete before moving to the next location. For example, “Say each word 10 times in your best pirate voice.” During this activity, students were also required to work as a team providing natural opportunities for problem solving.
For the next activity, I used a large bucket, kinetic sand and small items from the Lakeshore Alphabet Tubs. As student dug up the items, we practice describing each item. We also used the items to practice answering wh- questions and categorizing.
I love incorporating literature into my speech therapy session. Book are the perfect tool to keep students engaged and support your theme for the session. We read “There Was an Old Pirate Who Swallowed a Map” by Lucille Colandro and “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long. Both books are great for targeting sequencing and story re-tell.
The last activity we did was play a game, of course! We played Pop-Up Pirate. This is the first year to purchase this game and I am not sure what took me so long! My students love this game and the turns are quick allowing the game to move quickly!
If you want to have an amazing Pirate Day in speech, I will email you all of the printables in this post! Leave your email below and I will send you the treasure hunt, coins, banner and this game board! This game board is perfect to use when targeting any skill.
