I LOVE BOOKS! Reading picture books is a weekly activity in my speech therapy room. The pictures provide the perfect visuals for my early language learners and the themes or morals support high level thinkers working on metalinguistic skills. I often pull books for speech therapy that have a central theme and develop my therapy lessons around that topic. Of course, the lesson itself is more than just reading the story- it’s asking comprehension questions, illustrating and discussing new vocabulary and incorporating the student’s individualized therapy goals.
This year, I have been using Vooks and I am OBSESSED! Vooks is the first ever streaming service that brings children’s books to life with animated illustrations, read-a-long text and narrated stories. The current library on the platform is appropriate for children ages 2-8. There are so many reasons why I love using Vooks during speech therapy.
EXTENSIVE SELECTION OF BOOKS
First, Vooks offers a wide range of themes and titles. Books are organized by season, age, character traits, and more. This allows me to lesson plan effectively and select the most appropriate books for my students. In addition, I am easily able to incorporate a variety of books around a central theme.
SAVES SPACE AND PORTABLE
Second, in a smaller classroom, finding solutions to optimize my space is important. With Vooks, I have access to a full library, without the hassle of finding storage for an extensive library. In addition, I can also take my iPad with me and access Vooks through an app to provide speech therapy on-the-go.
READ-A-LONG TEXT
This last one is my favorite part! As the story is read aloud, each book has read-a-long text. This provides additional visual input and promotes opportunities for vocabulary development and listening comprehension. Also, my One Page Book Companions are perfect to company several books on Vooks.
